Picture Frame Project

Your objective is to create a fully functional picture frame and stand that will display a standard 5x7" photo
  • TOOLS
    • Learn about the PLANER and JOINTER
    • Learn to use the ROUTER TABLE
    • Learn to use the MITRE SAW
    • Learn to use a FENCE on the bandsaw
    • Learn to cut stock to precise size
      Learn the importance of uniform measurement and 45 degree angles
  • SKETCHUP
    • Learn to use the OFFSET tool
    • Learn to use the FOLLOW ME tool

STOCK SPECIFICATIONS
  • PINE STOCK approx 4"x 24" x 3/4"
    • WIDTH = <4" (max)
    • HEIGHT = 3/4" (precise)
    • LENGTH = ~24" (max)
  • GLASS: 1/8" thick (5"x7")
  • BACKBOARD: 1/8" thick
  • Glazing Push Points (HomeDepot)

RESEARCH
  1. What are the standard sizes for typical photos - what size do YOU want to display in the stand?
  2. What parts are there for a typical photo frame? Where could you acquire some of the components?
  3. What is LANDSCAPE and PORTRAIT orientation? Can you design to accomodate BOTH?

PLANNING using SKETCHUP Video
  1. Begin by drawing your PHOTO size to scale
  2. Use the OFFSET tool to draw an INSET of 1/4" around the photo - this will help hold the photo in place
  3. Use the OFFSET tool to expand a frame AROUND the photo - keep it to nice, round measurements that can be cut from the stock provided
  4. Draw 45 degree cuts in each corner
  5. Pull the DIMENSIONS out to determine the WIDTH and LENGTH of each panel of your frame
  6. Complete the plans by adding a TOP and SIDE view

You can try creating a 3D mockup of your design to help determine the ideal dimensions. This video illustrates the general construction.

Create your 2D plans based what you learn from your 3D design. Be accurate, and try to present the dimensions clearly and completely

FRAME PROFILE
The router table will be used to cut precise bevels and grooves that will A) allow the frame to securely hold the photo and glass, and B) give the final frame an attractive pattern once assembled. Below is a profile that uses TWO BITS
  • A 3/4" "rabbet" bit to make the flat "dado" groove on the FRONT face, and the "rabbet" groove on the INSIDE face
  • A Roman Ogee bevel on the OUTSIDE face
